Background and Study Purpose: The current organizational model in Internal Medicine II – Gastroenterology is based on functional nursing, with a sector reference nurse and a fundamental care nurse responsible for fundamental care. Over time, this model has highlighted fragmentation of care, information dispersion, and an increase in missed care. This is how the modular nursing model was implemented, which, along with the case management model, allows for more effective care.
Materials and Methods: The modular care model is an organizational model that combines the small team model and the primary nursing model. It was tested within the Internal Medicine II and Gastroenterology department (53 beds), thru the reorganization of staff resources.
Results: The sector nurse ensures complete assistance during the shift. Coordinates group members and provides direct assistance in collaboration with the rest of the team. All nurses on the shift have the necessary information to identify needs and be fully responsible.
Conclusions: The implementation of modular nursing represents an opportunity to put into practice a highly professionalizing and effective method of care delivery. The team has a comprehensive view of the person being assisted within their module and feels more fulfilled. It increases the satisfaction level of the team, the person being cared for, and the caregiver.
