Study Background and Purpose: Common Variable Immunodeficiency is a rare disease characterized by a deficiency in antibody production secondary to altered B-lymphocyte function. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of cardiovascular risk factors in patients with CVID, which is currently unknown, and the possible presence of differences in the development of organ damage based on the immunological phenotype present.
Materials and Methods: Observational study on 84 patients with CVID followed at Ca' Foncello Hospital in Treviso. For each patient, we collected anamnestic data, anthropometric measurements, blood pressure values, biochemical and immunological parameters. Organ damage was estimated by determining the Pulse-Wave Velocity and IMT in the common carotid artery.
Results: The average age was found to be 53.9 years, with a female prevalence (63.1%). Patients were stratified based on the presence of hypertension, overweight condition, dyslipidemia, diabetes, smoking, and Chapel phenotype. Only overweight (p=0.004) and hypertensive (p=0.024) patients showed a significant increase in PWV values compared to patients without these characteristics. No difference was found between the various subgroups in the IMT assessment.
Conclusions: In CVID patients, exposure to common cardiovascular risk factors does not seem to determine differences in the development of early vascular damage, while only hypertension and being overweight appear to lead to an increase in arterial stiffness.
